Atlanta Community Food Bank Mobilizes Community During Hunger Action Month as Food Insecurity Reaches Decade High

The Atlanta Community Food Bank is spearheading a critical community mobilization effort during September's Hunger Action Month as food insecurity reaches its highest level in over a decade, affecting over 47 million Americans including 14 million children. In Georgia, the crisis is particularly acute with 1 in 7 people and 1 in 5 children experiencing food insecurity, creating an urgent need for collective action.

Recent historic cuts to SNAP and Medicaid programs have exacerbated the situation, making food and healthcare increasingly inaccessible for millions. Kyle Waide, President & CEO of the Atlanta Community Food Bank, emphasized the severity of the challenge, stating that federal program reductions are significantly impacting services and creating increased strain on programs serving children, families, and seniors.

The Food Bank has launched multiple initiatives to engage the community throughout September. A dollar-for-dollar matching campaign up to $100,000 amplifies the impact of donations, with each dollar providing up to six meals. Supporters can contribute directly through the organization's website to maximize their giving power.

Community members are encouraged to wear orange throughout the month to raise awareness, with September 9 designated as Hunger Action Day when iconic Atlanta landmarks including 1105 West Peachtree Tower, Atlanta Zoo, and Ponce City Market will illuminate their buildings orange in solidarity. The campaign includes a 30-day social media challenge offering daily action suggestions and volunteer opportunities at the Food Bank's headquarters and Community Food Center locations.

As part of the national Feeding America network, the Atlanta Community Food Bank coordinates with member food banks across the country during Hunger Action Month. Supporters are using #HungerActionMonth on social media while tagging @FeedingAmerica and @ACFB to amplify the initiative's reach.
