Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum Balances Family Fun and Academic Programming in October

The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum is implementing a dual approach to community engagement this October, offering both family-friendly activities and academic programming that highlight the institution's commitment to accessible historical education. The museum's programming strategy demonstrates how cultural organizations can serve diverse audiences while fostering community connections through both creative and scholarly methods.

On October 4, 2025, the museum will host its monthly Free Fun Saturday event featuring a Design a Welcome Sign craft activity. Children and families can create their own welcome signs inspired by the historic Sanborn Square sign that greeted early visitors to Boca Raton. Admission is free throughout the day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the hands-on craft session beginning at 2 p.m. This initiative represents the museum's ongoing effort to provide barrier-free access to cultural programming for local residents.

Mary Csar, Executive Director of the Boca Raton Historical Society, emphasized the importance of these family-oriented programs. Free Fun Saturdays represent one of our favorite ways to engage children and families, Csar stated. This October, were excited to let kids imagine how they would showcase Boca to the world. The monthly free admission initiative serves as a model for how museums can introduce younger generations to historical concepts through creative expression while removing financial barriers to participation.

Later in the month, the museum shifts focus to more academic programming with a Town Hall Talk lecture titled The Continental Soldier: Washingtons Army in the Revolution on October 8, 2025, at 6 p.m. in the Historic Town Hall. This event features acclaimed historian and reenactor Robert Feeney and serves as the second lecture in the fall Town Hall Talk series. The program examines the ordinary men who transformed into extraordinary heroes while fighting for independence under George Washingtons command during the Revolutionary War.

The lecture is part of the museums multi-year America250: The 14th Colony commemoration initiative. Csar highlighted the significance of this program, noting that America250 invites us to take a thoughtful look at how our country came to beand the people who shaped it along the way. Through programs like our Town Hall Talks, were able to bring these important stories to life right here in Bocas original Town Hall. The lecture series represents the museums commitment to providing substantive historical content alongside its family programming, demonstrating how cultural institutions can balance entertainment with educational depth.
